Researcher Spotlight: The Effect of Construction Workers’ Cognitive Abilities...

Human error is one of the main causal factors in up to 80% of all accidents across various industries. Cognitive processes have been found to play a significant role in contributing to the human errors that lead to construction accidents. The SARMAD research team connects construction workers’ eye movements and measures of their cognitive processes to their individual characteristics and situational awareness in order to better predict human errors and mitigate their risks. By synthesizing cognitive science and construction safety, this project yields metrics for identifying at-risk workers, pinpointing required personalized safety training, and, eventually, improving future personal protective equipment to measure construction workers’ situation awareness in real time.

This webinar is hosted by Wilkey Wong, the Director of Knowledge Services for Tobii Pro, and presented by Sogand Hasanzadeh, a Graduate Research Assistant in the Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Hasanzadeh’s research primarily focuses on project delivery systems, procurement methods, team building, dispute resolution, and situational awareness in the construction industry.

Ellert from the Macromedia University of Applied Science in Munich, Germany,
explains how he uses eye tracking in order to obtain insights into human
behavior. Tobii Pro Glasses 2, the world’s most advanced wearable eye tracker, allows
him to conduct novice versus expert studies unobtrusively in dynamic environments
where the focus of attention is crucial, such as surfing, snowboarding, and
refereeing sports games.

In order to bring Pro Glasses 2
into surfing research for this project, a waterproof housing
system was created by Exotrack.
